NURSING AT (UWC) UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN CAPE
The School of Nursing at the University of the Western Cape is located in the Community and Health Science faculty. The School offers education and training in both under and post graduate levels. All programs offered by the School are recognized by the South African Nursing Council for registration and registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). The School of Nursing is the largest residential nursing school in the country and offers the Bachelor of Nursing (BNurs) as its core undergraduate programme. The School further offers the Master of Nursing (MNur) and Doctor Philosophy (PhD.) as part of its postgraduate program
Programmes
Undergraduate-BNursing
The B Nursing programme is a full time, structured programme with prescribed modules offered over four years. In addition, registered students are placed in clinical facilities, such as hospitals, for compulsory clinical learning and are expected to fulfil the clinical requirements set out in the programme as directed by the South African Nursing Council.

Postgraduate Programmes
MNur Stuctured:
The School of Nursing offers three structured masters courses:
- M Nursing (Midwifery and Neonatology)
- M Nursing (Advanced Psychiatry)
- M Nursing (Nursing Education)
The course work average and mini-thesis each accounts for 50% towards the completion of the degree. Each specialisation has its own prescibed admnission requirements and recommendations for prospective students. These are set out under each course.

ANN LATSKY NURSING COLLEGE APPLICATION
The Ann Latsky Nursing College and the South African Nursing Council (SANC) have launched an online admission application form for potential students interested in attending the Ann Latsky Nursing College for the academic year.
The Ann Latsky Nursing College provides training in collaboration with a variety of private and public hospitals and community institutions, allowing students to obtain practical experience under the supervision of our Educators and Registered Nurses.
Every student enrolled in any of the Ann Latsky Nursing College’s programs of study must carefully read, comprehend, and follow the instructions which are available on the SANC and Groote Schuur Hospital Nursing School websites.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR ANN LATSKY NURSING COLLEGE
Admission Requirements
- 4 year BNur
- One year relevant clinical experience or in an area of specialisation
- Proof of registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Nurse or Midwife
Registration and orientation
The University registration period opens early January and students are to ensure that they consult the General calendar for schedule and registration rules.
In addition to the orientation provided by the University, the school will present its own orientation for Nursing postgraduate students. Students will be notified via email with regards to the programme or may check the website for details.
Attendance
The course cannot be done via correspondence and attendance of lectures is required. As full and part time share the same lecture periods, one Tuesday every two weeks have been set aside for PG class attendance
Cost
The course fees for each year of enrolment is determined by the combined cost of the total number of modules registered per enrolment. - PRECEPTORSHIP TRAINING FOR NURSES
Purpose of course / Course description
There is currently a shortage of professional nurses in most service settings in South Africa. This impacts on the support provided to student nurses who are placed in these settings. The purpose of this course is to equip professional nurses to perform the role of clinical preceptor. The clinical perceptor will assist you with the development of clinical competencies, which will have a direct impact on the quality of patient care delivery within clinical service settings. The course will be offered for Continuing Professional Development purposes.
Course outcomes
At the end of the course you will be able to:
- Apply the principles of clinical teaching, learning and assessment within the context of adult education
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the preceptor in clinical teaching and learning
- Effectively manage a preceptor-students in simulated and service learning settings
- Apply relevant knowledge, skills and attributes in the process of clinical teaching and learning
- Initiate, monitor and evaluate a tailor-made skills training programme
- Motivatmse students to maintain an interest in learning through the use of creative approaches to teaching and learning

This course includes:
- Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD)
- Compression Bandaging
- Self Care
- Remedial Excercise
Purpose of course/course description:
Currently there is no course available in South Africa that addresses MLD and CDT. This course aims to cover that gap
Course Outcomes
At the end of the course you will be expected to be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system
- Know the indications and contra-indications of MLD and CDT
- Be competent to apply MLD and CDT to patients suffering of primary or secondary lymphedema
- Demonstrate competency in bandaging techniques for upper and lower extremities
- Demonstrate an understanding in the importance of remedial lymphedema excercises and skin hygiene
Entry requirements
Candidates need to be in possession of an undergraduate degree or diploma in health or health-related sciences or the social sciences, and/or several years of working experience in the treatment of patients with lymphedema.

FEE AND FINE PAYABLE TO SANC
The fees and fines payable to the South African Nursing Council are regulated by the Regulations regarding Fees and Fines payable to the South African Nursing Council published by Government Notice No. R.170 of 8 March 2013 (as amended).
The amounts payable for the various fees are published by Notice in the Government Gazette – as and when the fee amounts are amended. A list of the currently applicable notices can be found at the bottom of this web page.

SOUTH AFRICAN NURSING COUNCIL REFERENCE DEPOSIT BANK ACCOUNT DETAILS
South African Nursing Council prefers all payments to be made into its Reference Deposit Bank Account. This account has been specially set up so that the details of the payer and the purpose for which the payment is made can be captured by the bank – which will significantly speed up the time taken to process payments.

While payments into this account can be made in person at any branch of FNB (First National Bank), electronic means such as Internet banking, cell phone banking, and ATM payments can also be used. Some of these require that a payment beneficiary be set up on your bank/card account. Please consult your own bank if you need any assistance in setting up a beneficiary.
Standard Bank clients should please select the option for paying a business account. When asked to enter the name of the beneficiary, you should enter ‘S A Nursing Council’ – please note the SPACE between the ‘S’ and the ‘A’ otherwise you will not see SANC’s details listed.
The special feature of this reference deposit account is that it has the ability to capture the payer’s account number and a payment type code in the Reference details.
This information is verified (in the correct format) if paying at any FNB branch or when using FNB online banking. Standard Bank’s system will insist on and only permit the account number to be captured. For all other methods of electronic payments, it is up to the person making the payment to ensure that the correct information is provided.

HOW TO USE A REFERENCE DEPOSIT ACCOUNT TO PAY FEES OR FINES TO THE SOUTH AFRICAN NURSING COUNCIL
No matter what method of payment you choose, albeit at an FNB branch or some form of electronic banking, you must please ensure that the deposit reference is correctly filled in. The reference consists of two parts:
- Your SANC account number (8 digits); and
- A payment type code (7 CAPITAL LETTERS) – written immediately after the account number.
The following line is an example of what a correct reference will look like:
12345678ANLFEES
In this example, ‘12345678‘ is the account number and ‘ANLFEES‘ is the payment type code. You will notice that the reference is always 15 characters long.
PLEASE NOTE that the above reference is only an example and you should not use the above details for making any payment (it will be rejected by the bank). You must use your own reference number as the account number and choose the appropriate payment type code from the list given below.
STEP 1: Check and write down your SANC account number. This is the same as your SANC reference number which is always 8 digits long and starts with a ‘1’.
STEP 2: Determine the appropriate payment type code from the list below and write it immediately after your SANC account number. Do NOT leave a space between your account number and the payment type code
This is your correct reference to be used for this payment. (Any future payments will use the same account number but the payment type code may change according to the purpose for which payment is being made.)
