In South Africa, approximately 46% of the population are beneficiaries of a social grant. This means that 27.8 million South Africans are social grant recipients.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced that social grants will increase above the inflation rate. The announcement was made during his inaugural 2023 Budget Speech.

Here Are The SASSA Grant Increases

  • Old Age grant will increase to R1 985 from R1 890 (5% increase)
  • Old Age grant (above 75 years old) and War Veterans grant will increase to R2 005 from R1 910 (5% increase)
  • The care Dependency grant will increase to R1 985 from R1 890 (5% increase)
  • Foster Care grant will increase to R1 070 from R1 050 to (1.9% increase)
  • Child Support Grant will increase to R480 from the current R460 (4.3% increase)

Minister Godongwana revealed that the Department of Social Development will receive the largest allocation of R58.6 billion over the medium term

National Treasury, in the 2023 Budget Review explained that the total number of grant beneficiaries in the country will increase by an average of 1.5%. This means that the number of grant recipients will increase from 18.4 million in 2021/2023 to 19.2 million in 2024/25.

The figures mentioned above do not include the 10.5 million beneficiaries of the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) R350 grant.

“The child support and old age grants together account for more than half of total grant expenditure over the MTEF period. These grants will support a total of 17.2 million beneficiaries in 2023/23,” revealed the document.
