Royal Navy Recruitment
Persons interested in joining specifically the Royal Navy of Britain’s Armed Forces are asked to note that under the Revised Regulations for Recruitment, fifty (50) spaces have been allotted for Commonwealth Nationals not living in the United Kingdom to apply.
There are several specialist areas where the Royal Navy is seeking to recruit personnel. These areas can be viewed on the website mentioned below. Interested persons are further asked to take note that it is essential that applicants be able to swim and that short-listed applicants will be required to travel to the U.K. for tests. Applicants requested to come to the U.K. for tests will need to spend approximately three (3) months there taking tests and awaiting results.

ROYAL NAVY COMMONWEALTH APPLICANTS
If you’re a Commonwealth citizen, you no longer need to be a UK resident to apply, which means a career in the Royal Navy is more accessible than ever.
You can find all the roles currently available to Commonwealth applicants below. To apply, you will need to hold a valid passport and meet the eligibility criteria for your chosen role. If you’re an overseas applicant, you need to be age 18 or over and have a Visa. If you live in the UK, you can apply from age 16 and will need a biometric residency card.
If you wish to apply as a Nursing Rating or Nursing Officer you need to hold registration with the Nursing and Midwifery council. If you wish to join as a Medical Officer and your primary medical qualification is from outside the UK or EEA the General Medical Council needs to make sure it is acceptable in the UK.

Royal Navy Recruitment General Eligibility
Age
You need to be aged 16 or over to join the Royal Navy. If you’re under the age of 18, you will need the consent of a parent or guardian. You can find out the age requirements for each job by using our Role Finder.
You can join the Royal Navy if you’re aged 16 to 39, dependent on the role you choose. The shortest Royal Navy career is four years, but you can choose to serve up to 22 years and beyond, depending on the needs of the Service.

Medical
Each Royal Navy role has its own joining process, which includes a series of assessments, which include physical tests, multiple choice exams, and a medical.
You need to be medically fit to deal with everything that life in the Royal Navy throws at you. Detailed medical advice can be found on the website but common conditions that may delay or bar your entry to the Naval Service include:
Asthma within the last four years (not including a single chest infection)
A break or joint strain that caused you to seek medical help
Any medical condition that requires regular prescription medication or review by your GP
If your BMI exceeds 28 or is under 18. There may be some exceptions to the upper BMI rate if your waist measures less than 94cm (This NHS calculator will help you determine your BMI)
Minimum height of 151.5cm (157cm for Submariners)

If your condition is not fully explained, speak to your Careers Adviser who can contact the Naval Service Medical Team. You don’t have to discuss the problem directly with the Careers Adviser, they can pass your contact details to the Medical Team to ensure complete privacy.
Nationality and residency
Some roles have stricter nationality and residency requirements than others for security reasons, but in general, you can join the Royal Navy if you are:
A national of the United Kingdom or Ireland
A Commonwealth citizen who is applying from inside their own country must be 18. If a resident of the UK you can apply at 16. You must hold a current in date passport and it is the responsibility of individual applicants to ensure that they have permission to be in the UK this permission is valid for the entirety of the recruitment process up to the point of entry (this does not apply to citizens of the Republic of Ireland, Malta and the Republic of Cyprus)
A dual Commonwealth or British national who is not required to complete national service (written evidence is required)
A British national living abroad
Criminal convictions
If you have a criminal record, you may still be able to join the Royal Navy, depending on the offense and type of sentence. However, if you’ve committed certain offenses or served specific types of sentences, you might be permanently barred from entering or re-entering the Royal Navy.
You will be required to:
Complete a full Security Check
Declare all previous convictions, both spent and unspent
Undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check if you’re applying to the medical branch, gaining a suitability certificate where appropriate

Tattoos and piercings
We have recently revised our tattoo policy (as of July 2018). Most tattoos and piercings won’t prevent you from joining the Royal Navy, providing:
Tattoos are not visible on a front-view passport (e.g. not on your face, throat area, or in front of your ears)
Tattoos are not offensive or obscene (see our policy for full details)
Any piercings can be removed. Flesh tunnels are a barrier to entry
Tattoos on your hands are now acceptable if they follow the guidelines outlined above. If you have any questions about your tattoos or the change in policy, please contact a careers adviser.
You will need to fill in a form describing your tattoos and must also show them during the selection process. You will also be required to remove certain body jewelry before taking part in any physical activity.

Joining the Royal Navy as a non-UK national
Bringing your family
Once you are a serving member of the Royal Navy, you are exempt from immigration controls.
That means you won’t need a visa to stay in the UK as long as you remain in service. This is the case from the day you start training.
Normal immigration rules will still apply to your family, so they could need a visa to visit the UK and may only be able to stay for a limited period of time. It’s also important that your family meet the minimum English language requirements.
Minimum Income Requirements
If you want to bring your family to the UK, you’ll need to meet minimum income requirements, which vary based on your family circumstances.
- £18,600 gross salary needed to bring a partner
- £22,400 to bring a partner and a child
- +£2,400 for each additional child
- £16,000 savings over this amount can count
- £18,489 a rating starting salary after training
Visa Costs
Once you meet the minimum income requirements, you will need to pay the appropriate visa costs. These include:
- £1,532 per dependent for a five-year visa
- £2,389 per dependent to permanently settle in the UK (2018/19) after five years of residency
- £1,330 per dependent to gain UK citizenship by naturalization (2018/19) after 12 months of holding permanent settlement
The Royal Navy cannot help you with any of these visa costs. Remember, choosing to settle permanently in the UK is entirely voluntary and is not a requirement.

How will my application be assessed?
Although the process is relatively straightforward, each application will be considered on its own merit and any potential offer of service will reflect your individual circumstances. Branch managers will review your application and make an offer to you based on the following:
- Previous rank/rate and seniority
- Length of time out of service
- Your age (you must be under the age of 37 to re-join the Royal Marines, and under 50 to join the Royal Navy)
- Your health; you must be fit and healthy
- Any training required to get you up to speed
- You will not be able to re-enter the Naval Service if you left under a Medical Board of Survey (MBOS).
