Standard Bank’s available for bursaries
Derek Cooper Scholarship
Standard Bank offers the Derek Cooper Scholarship named after a successful African businessperson who intends to financially empower men and women to follow in his entrepreneurial footsteps for continual innovative and economic growth throughout Africa.
Nine students are chosen annually as candidates; each of the nine students is thoroughly assessed in order to make the best decision to award it to student with the most potential towards the enhancement of Africa’s business and economic growth. This bursary is for South African students studying at the post-graduate level in any one of the following UK-based institutions:
- Cambridge
- Oxford
- London School of Economics
- or London School of Political Science.
Group bursaries
This Standard Bank Group Bursary is for prospective undergraduate students who have an A level average in their previous academic pursuits. People currently working towards degrees in engineering, technology, science and commerce are all encouraged to apply for the Standard Bank Group Bursary.
Similarly, the Standard Bank Postgraduate Bursary is awarded to current undergraduate students who are planning to further their education. Prospective postgraduate students in all applicable degree programs for the undergraduate Standard Bank Group Bursary are encouraged to apply for the Standard Bank Postgraduate Group Bursary as well as those planning to study mathematics.
Multitude of new bursaries and scholarships
In 2012, Standard Bank celebrated its 150th anniversary. In honor of that anniversary it created 150 new undergraduate bursaries and 150 new postgraduate bursaries.
Each of these has a nuanced emphasis to target a specific area within any of the broad disciplines already mentioned with regard to any of the above bursaries.
The undergraduate assistance is for any high-achieving second-year students as he/she prepares for the third year in an applicable undergraduate degree program. Students eligible to apply for postgraduate assistance are in their final undergraduate year, have performed with academic excellence and plan to begin postgraduate work the following year.

Undergraduate Bursary
The Standard Bank Group Undergraduate Bursary
The undergraduate bursary is specific to students that are on track to successfully complete their 1st year and require funding from their 2nd year of studies onwards. Applicants should be well-rounded with strong academic results in funded qualifications.
Minimum selection criteria:
- Applicants must have achieved an average of 65% and above in the latest examinations.
- Applicants must be registered for full-time undergraduate studies.
- Applicants will be required to participate in a formal assessment process including but not limited to Psychometric evaluation and an interview.
- Financial need is considered in applications.
Postgraduate Bursary
The Standard Bank Group Postgraduate Bursary
The Standard Bank Group Bursary provides full-cost bursaries to financially deserving and academically sound students wishing to pursue postgraduate studies in the funded study fields.
Minimum selection criteria:
- Applicants must have achieved an average of 65% and above in the latest examinations.
- Applicants must register for full-time postgraduate studies at a public South African institution of higher learning
- Applicants will be required to participate in a formal assessment process including but not limited to Psychometric evaluation and interview.
- Financial need is considered in applications.
Bursary Details
The Standard Bank Group Bursary Fund is a full-cost bursary, covering the following study and study-related costs:
- University fees.
- Accommodation – in a university residence or in private accommodation. Private accommodation costs will be subject to certain limits, to be explained to successful candidates upon the provisional bursary allocation.
- Meals – provided by the university or self-catering.
- Books and other study materials.
- A laptop computer.
- A monthly stipend to cover other living costs.
- Transport between home and campus 4 times a year at the cost of a bus ticket.
Selection Criteria
The Standard Bank Group Bursary Fund is specific to students that require funding for their second, third and final year of undergraduate studies as well as for students pursuing their postgraduate studies up to Master’s level.
Applicants should be well-rounded with strong academic results in the fields of Agriculture, Commerce, Engineering, Mathematics, Science (Actuarial, Analytics, Business, Computer, Data, Information), Statistics, Technology (Financial, Information) and the disciplines in the emerging field of Behavioural Economics (Economics, Behavioural Finance, Sociology, Psychology, Neuroscience)
- Applicants should have a 65% aggregate.
- Applicants must register for full-time studies.
- Financially deserving applicants will be considered.
How to apply Standard Bank Bursaries
Applications must be completed on StudyTrust’s Xhuma platform before 30 September to be considered for a bursary for next year.
Follow the “Apply Here” button at the bottom and create a profile on Xhuma – using either WhatsApp or the web.
The following documents will have to be uploaded:
- Certified copy of ID
- Proof of all academic results to date (Gr 12 certificate and full tertiary academic record)
- Proof of combined household income
If you qualify for the Standard Bank Group bursary, Xhuma will offer that choice and one other to you. Indicate clearly that you specifically apply for the Standard Bank bursary. Your application will be considered for all other StudyTrust-managed bursaries you qualify for.
