Join the NARYSEC Firefighter and Traffic Officer Trainee Programme 2026
South African youth in rural areas have a chance to build skills and serve their communities through the National Rural Youth Service Corps (NARYSEC) Firefighter and Traffic Officer Trainee Programme 2026. The Department of Land Reform and Rural Development runs this program to help unemployed young people gain training in key fields. Applications close on 25 May 2026, so act fast if you qualify.
This program takes place in the Johannes Phumani Phungula Local Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal. It offers hands-on experience that can lead to better job prospects. Young people aged 18 to 35 from the area can apply for roles as firefighter trainees or traffic officer trainees.
What Is the NARYSEC Programme?
The NARYSEC Programme aims to empower rural youth with skills, training, and community service. It supports the National Development Plan Vision 2030 by focusing on youth development and economic growth. Participants help with local projects while learning practical skills.
The training starts with a 9-week induction and Youth Leadership Development Programme. After that, trainees move to hands-on work in firefighting or traffic services. This mix of classroom learning and real-world tasks prepares youth for future careers.
Training Opportunities Available
You can choose from two main fields:
Firefighter Trainee
This role teaches how to handle fires, rescues, and emergencies. Trainees learn safety gear use, fire control, and teamwork in tough situations. It builds fitness and quick thinking for community protection.
Traffic Officer Trainee
Trainees study road rules, vehicle checks, and traffic control. They practice issuing fines, accident response, and driver education. A valid Code B driver’s license is key for this position.
Both paths offer paid training and community service hours.
