The access criteria for the Free State School of Nursing is guided by:

National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by Umalusi with six subjects from the designated list or equivalent certificate
- Matric Certificate or equivalent thereof
- AP score 25 and above (6 Subjects and Life Orientation)
- Life Orientation counted as 1 irrespective of the level obtained
Compulsory
- English level 4 (50-59%) and above
- Mathematic Literacy (50-59%) and above
- Life Science (50-59%) and above
Recommended
- Computer Literacy Grade 9
- Preference will be given to candidates Physical Science
SENIOR CERTIFICATE OBTAINED BEFORE 2008
- Matriculation Exemption or equivalent thereof
- M-Score 23 and above (A maximum of 6 subjects)

Candidates will be required to meet following criteria
- Matric Certificate or equivalent thereof
- Diploma in Nursing (NQF level 6)
- Registration as a General Nurse at the South African Nursing Council.
