THUTO BOPHELO NURSING ACADEMY COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKER

Community Health Worker is the ideal qualification for anyone who is or wants to be involved in Ancillary Health Care Services.

The qualification is intended to enhance the provision of entry-level service within the field of health care in all sectors so when you complete this qualification, you will have a range of awareness and competencies and you will be able to work as a health promoter, health provider and health networker within a community development context.

The Course

A blend of theory and practical training, the Community Health Worker Skills Programme follows the policy set by the Health and Wellness SETA and is presented as 30% theory and 70% practical workplace experience. All theoretical training takes place on our online learning platform through our Pretoria-based Academy. You will be placed within our partner organizations for your practical training.

 

WHAT DO COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS DO? 

It is a very rewarding career as you will be providing a service that will assist communities to better manage their own health and wellness. You will work as part of a team to provide support services within a much broader, multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Community health workers serve as liaisons between health educators, communities, social services, and other healthcare professionals. Duties for this position are varied and include advocating for the needs of individuals and the community, education on the availability of healthcare services, and conducting outreach programmes.

Helping people at a grassroots level to meet their basic health needs, is an extension of Primary Health Care which reaches out to people at a household level.

Community health workers are generally employed in a wide range of government and social sectors.

As a Community Health Worker you will be qualified to:

  • Facilitate and administrate community health activities/centers via supervision of a team of health care workers.
  • Provide community health care.
  • Provide care for people with intellectual and physical disabilities.
  • Assist in planning advocacy campaigns to support primary health care initiatives.
  • Assist in facilitating and implementing primary health care projects within the community.

Community health workers will generally carry out their roles in the following locations:

  • The client’s home
  • A community care centre
  • The broader community

Further Career Opportunities

As you will have a further education and training certificate, you will be eligible for certain access recognition in various higher education health qualifications.

Deposit:
R10 000 tuition fee PLUS R350 Indemnity Insurance (to be paid in full upon Registration)

Balance is payable in monthly installments of R2 041, over 11 months from month of commencement.
