University of the Free State Application, Requirements & Applications Opening Dates
The management of the University of the Free State has released the University of the Free State online admission application and registration dates for 2026 Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Masters, Diploma, Certificate, Degree Programmes for the 2026 academic year.

University of the Free State Application Requirements

  • You have an NSC or NCV with an endorsement that allows entrance to degree studies (bachelor’s degree) or an equivalent qualification.
  • You meetĀ allĀ the minimumĀ admission requirementsĀ for the programme you intend to study.
  • Meeting the minimum admission requirements for your chosen/intended programme of study,Ā does not guarantee admission, as limited spaces are available in each programme.
  • You have a minimum level of 4 (50%) in the chosen UFS language of instruction: English or Afrikaans (only applicable to certain programmes).
  • You must pass certain school subjects with a minimum level of achievement in order to take a certain university module. For example, you must get a mark of at least 70% for Mathematics in Grade 12 if you plan to study BSc majoring in Physics with Engineering subjects.

  • apply for two study options – if one option is a selection programme, we advise you to choose a non-selection programme as the second option, because space is limited;
  • be finally admitted with your final Grade 12 NSC or IEB results;

Applications to stdy a non-selection programme in 2026, close on 30 September 2020.
Limited space is available;Ā apply now to avoid disappointment.

Application fee:Ā You do not have to pay an application fee.

To become a student at the University of the Free State, you have to:

  1. APPLYĀ for two study options, be finally
  2. ADMITTEDĀ with your Grade 12 NSC results, and
  3. REGISTER.

Applications open on Tuesday, 1 April 2025.Ā Application to the UFS isĀ free.

  • Undergraduate applicants: If you require further information before applying, consult theĀ 2026 Undergraduate Prospectus. Only apply for programmes for which you meetĀ allĀ the minimum entrance requirements. You may choose two options to study.Ā  Should you opt to choose only one study choice, you will not be able to add the second study choice, nor will you be allowed to change at a later stage.
  • For postgraduate programmes, consult theĀ 2026 Postgraduate Prospectus. Additionally, visit the faculty of your interest for detailed requirements:Ā www.ufs.ac.za
  • For your application to be submitted, you must completeĀ all stagesĀ of the online application.
  • Once you have submitted your application, you will receive a confirmation email.

International Applicants

  • For undergraduate (UG) applications, please note that the closing date isĀ 31 August.
  • Ensure that the documentation that you upload is certified.

Submitting documents and results

  • Learners currently at schoolĀ mustĀ submit final Grade 11 or June Grade 12 results (depending on when you apply). Failure to submit any documents will result in delays in the processing of your application. If you applied with your grade 11 results, you can upload your grade 12 results onĀ Self-ServiceĀ atĀ https://myapplication.ufs.ac.za/
  • If you have already completed Grade 12, submit your final Grade 12 certificate.
  • Documents submittedĀ mustĀ not be more than 3 MB in size. You do not need to certify your documents.
  • For postgraduate applications and transferring students, upload all requested documents, including the academic record, with your application. International postgraduate students must upload the SAQA certificate.
  • Failure to upload correct information will lead to delays in processing your application.

 

Monitoring your application

  • After submitting your application, you will receive an application acknowledgement letter with your student number included.
  • When your application status is updated, you will receive anĀ email communication.Ā Please monitor your email account for important university communication. You can also check your status online on Self-Service at (https://myapplication.ufs.ac.za/) using your login details – including your password – which will be sent to you after you submit your application.
  • We are not allowed to disclose your application status telephonically.
