About CETA

CETA stands for Construction Education and Training Authority, and it is one of the EQTAs (Education and Training Quality Assurance) in South Africa. It is concerned with the construction industry. CETA’s core responsibility is to initiate skill projects and provide learning opportunities to students and professionals involved in the construction sector.

 

CETA implements the National Skills Development Strategy in five sub-sectors of the construction industry, which are:

  • Building construction
  • Roads and civil construction
  • Built environment profession
  • Materials manufacturing
  • Electrical construction

Among other activities, CETA develops qualifications, accredits training providers, develops sector skills plan, allocates mandatory and discretionary grants, monitors training projects, certify learners, and conducts Quality Assurance of all the training activities.

 

Thapelo Madibeng Bursary 2022

CETA understands that not everyone has the financial capabilities to pursue education in the construction sector. To help such candidates, it runs a bursary programme. It was renamed the Thapelo Madibeng Bursary programme in 2018 in honour of Thapelo Madibeng, a core business executive, who passed away in the same year.

The bursaries are awarded to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. For the academic session 2022-23, here are the fields of study eligible for bursary funding:

Students of Public Universities

  • BSc degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Construction Economics, Construction Management, Construction Studies, Geomatics, Property Development, Quantity Surveying, Urban and Regional Planning
  • National Diploma in Architecture
  • BA in Building Arts

Students of University of Technology

  • National Diploma in Building, Quantity Surveying, Real Estate, Surveying

Students of TVET College:

  • NCV in Civil Engineering and Building Construction, Electrical Infrastructure Construction (Level 2 to 4)

The maximum bursary amount is set at R 120,000 per year for each student. It will depend on and cover the following costs:

  • Registration fees
  • Tuition fees
  • Accommodation
  • Meals
  • Textbooks
  • Any other expenses related to the study

Initially, the bursaries will be awarded for one academic year. Students can apply for renewal and get funding for an additional year based on satisfactory performance.

 

Eligibility Criteria Of The CETA Thapelo Madibeng Bursary

To be selected for the bursary programme, you must fulfill the eligibility criteria. These are laid out by CETA to select the most deserving candidates. Failing to meet any of the criteria leads to rejection. Therefore, always cross-check before applying.

The eligibility requirements for Thapelo Madibeng Bursary 2022 are:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must be under the age of 35 for undergrad students (no age restriction for postgrad students)
  • Must be studying full-time
  • Must be pursuing a degree in one of the fields of study mentioned above
  • Must be either studying or have registered to study at a public institution (students from private institutions are not considered)
  • Must not be receiving funds from any CETA funded organization, any public funding scheme, or NSFAS
  • Must have completed Matric
  • Must have scored at least 60% in Matric
  • Must have scored at least Level 5 for Math and Physical Science in Matric
  • Must not have failed in more than two subjects
  • Household income shouldn’t exceed R 350,000 per year

Students belonging to certain designated groups will get preference over others.

Documents Required

The next step is to submit the documents that are needed for this bursary programme. It’s important that you upload all of the following documents in PDF format:

  • A certified copy of an ID document
  • A certified copy of the latest Matric results or Matric certificate
  • A certified copy of the complete tertiary academic record for applicants who are currently studying
  • A proof of acceptance to study printed on the letterhead of the tertiary institution
  • ID documents of parents/guardians
  • A certified copy of proof of income of the applicant’s parents or guardians in the form of bank statements (6 months), most recent payslips (for employed parents or guardians) declaration or affidavit (for unemployed parents or guardians, proof of pension or social grant (if applicable), doctors certificate (for permanently disabled parents or guardians), death certificate (for deceased parents or guardians

Failure to submit all of these will lead to the application getting disregarded.
